Bird Watching In Southwest
Louisiana Ranks Among Top 10 In Nation
Birding enthusiasts who visit Grosse Savanne Lodge will have the opportunity
to experience why others have proclaimed Southwest Louisiana to be
one of the top 10 birding spots in the United States. As many as half
of all land birds that breed in eastern North America are believed
to pass through the area twice each year, and waterfowl appear to
be just as dependent on the region's resources.
In addition to overlapping both the Central and Mississippi Flyways,
Grosse Savanne's 50,000 acres of privately managed marshes and prairies
are located only a wingspan from the Gulf Coast beaches. The lodge,
which is located just off the Creole
Nature Trail All-American Road, is also within driving distance
of boundless other birding opportunities, including three national
wildlife refuges, a state wildlife refuge, a bird and butterfly
sanctuary, and our very own 200 acre cypress swampland rookery,
which nests thousands of herons, egrets, grosbeaks, ibis, and Roseate
Spoonbill.
Grosse Savanne offers transportation to several of these locations
for nature lovers to view many varieties of waterfowl, shore birds,
wading birds, and many other wildlife species. In addition, boat
tours are offered in our own private marshes or you may choose to
take a leisurely walk around our private bass pond and along the
woods adjacent to our lodge.
We invite you to join us this season for your choice of tours.
